Porthmadog Harbour Station is at the southernmost end of the Welsh Highland Railway and is where it connects with the Ffestiniog Railway.
When originally opened as the Welsh Highland it connected with the Festiniog here however, Harbour Station was nothing like as elaborate as it is now. Indeed when the Welsh Highland reopened through to Porthmadog in February 2011 it was still with a very similar layout to the old Welsh Highland with both trains to Caernarfon and to Blaenau Ffestiniog having to use the same single platform.
With a much larger station so obviously needed in October 2011 work started on widening the Cob to be able to take an island platform capable of serving both railways. Work on the enlarged station itself started in 2012 by progressively altering the trackwork on the Ffestiniog side of the station. This was followed by two winters of extensive construction work with the enlarged station being officially opened on the 22nd May 2014.
Harbour Station though doesn't come under the remit of the Cymdeithas Rheilffordd Eryri scheme of station carers. Instead it is maintained by the various full time and volunteer groups working on the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways.
