The Project:

The project aims to maintain the railway's stations and buildings.

It is based around the Society's 'Adopt a Station' initiative and the group involved will be working closely with the Joint Landscaping Group.

Stations and Buildings

There are currently 5 operational stations on the railway together with a further 5 halts. This number will shortly increase as new halts are introduced and as the line is extended further towards Porthmadog. As the railway was rebuilt there was only sufficient resources to open basic facilities at most of these stops and so the Society is fully involved in the provision of enhanced facilities where appropriate.

This help is taking place in several forms at present. The first being the construction and erection of waiting shelters such as those at Snowdon Ranger and Meillionen. This effort is now added too with the introduction of the Adopt a Station scheme. With this Groups or groups of individuals are sought to adopt a particular station and to look after it as required. Giving that extra bit of tender loving care so as to make it much more presentable to the traveling public.

The latest stations to be completed for the Railway are those at Pont Croesor and Nantmor. Whilst Pont Croesor is a basic platform facility, that at Nantmor is of the same style some other halts along the line and is provided with a suitable waiting shelter.

Nantmor Halt Opening 26th May 2010 (Phote: Dave Waldren)The Nantmor Halt was made possible through funds raised to provide a fitting memorial to the late Dr Ben Fisher. Ben was the author of the WHR Project website that is now part of the Society's site and so can be viewed through the navigation link above. Ben used the website to record and report all the activities during the rebuilding of the railway. This was so effective that it is now seen as a very significant historical record.

A fundraising exercise took place during the winter of 2009/10 that subsequently enabled the the halt to be completed in spring to early summer 2010. This was timed to coincide with the reopening to Pont Croesor on Wednesday 26th May 2010. The picture here shows the first train to Pont Croesor calling at Nantmor Halt for the opening ceremony.

The Society is now working on provision of better facilties at Waunfawr station
