Summer trips 2012
.

It gives us great pleasure to invite you to join the North Wales Group of Cymdeithas Rheilffordd Eryri on a couple of interesting outings this coming July.

Saturday, 7th July - A one day trip

This trip will commence in the Bangor area, with a bus collecting participants en route to Pwllheli. At Pwllheli we will join a Cambrian Line train (9:30) to Penhelyg (near Aberdyfi), where we will disembark and make our way down the steps from the station to the Penhelyg Arms where we will have lunch (our stay will be approximately 2 hours). We will then climb the stairs again to catch a train to Machynlleth and onward to Shrewsbury. There will be about an hour’s break at Shrewsbury before we board a train for Bangor (arrival 18:40). The bus will then take those who wish to travel beyond Bangor in the direction of Pwllheli.

The cost will be approximately £40 per person (which includes the cost of the  bus, train and lunch).

Friday to Monday, 20th – 23rd July - Long weekend trip.

This trip will be over four days with three nights in a hotel, the programme will comprise:

Friday, 20th July: Morning departure by bus from the Penygroes/Caernarfon area, picking up fellow travellers along the A55 to arrive at the Churnet Valley Railway by lunchtime. Spend the afternoon travelling along the line before departing for our hotel at Derby. The hotel is the Premier Inn on the outskirts of Derby where we will be staying for the three nights.

Saturday, 21st July: Depart the hotel for Derby railway station where we will take a train for Duffield, here we will change train for the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. This line extends from Duffield to Wirksworth. We will spend the day travelling on the line, a visit to the loco shed and possibly an opportunity to drive a diesel loco (additional charge for this). Wirksworth is a small town with many interesting features with its heritage centre detailing the history of the area. We will take the last train of the day to return to Duffield, change train and back to Derby.

Sunday, 22nd July: There are three options for this day:
1.Again a train from Derby railway station, this time to Matlock, here we will change to a Peak Rail train that will take us to Rowsley North. From here our bus will then take us to Bakewell, where we will have an opportunity to have lunch. After lunch we will walk to the old railway station and start on the Monsal Trail. We will then walk along the old trackbed of the Derby to Manchester line to Millers Dale, which is approximately 6 miles. The tunnels on the line have recently been reopened and upgraded with lighting to facilitate walking, cycling or horse riding through them. There are information points along the way where you can hear the voices of those that worked on the line relating the history of the area and the railway. It will take approximately 2 to 3 hours to walk this section of the old line which is well supplied with refreshments stops along the way. The bus will collect us at Millers Dale at about 18:00 for return to the hotel at Derby.
2.Commence as for option 1. above as far as Bakewell. After lunch the bus will take those who wish to visit Chatsworth House (additional charge for entry) there for the afternoon and then return you to the hotel at Derby.
3.Commence as for option 1. above as far as Matlock. You can then choose to ride up and down on Peak Rail, visit Matlock town or nearby Matlock Bath. The bus will collect you at Matlock for return to the hotel at Derby at the end of the afternoon.

Monday, 23rd July: Commence after breakfast, at about 10:00 for the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley where we will spend the day. We start back for North Wales at about 17:00.

The cost will be about £240 per person, which will include the cost of bed & breakfast for three nights, the cost of the bus and most of the train journeys.
