Welcome to the official website of Cymdeithas Rheilffordd Eryri, the Welsh Highland Railway Society.  The Society exists to give support for the Welsh Highland Railway, including voluntary work for the Railway and financial support for projects on the Railway.

The website caters both for members of the Society and for those with an interest who might wish to join the Society.

In this site you will find information on:

            • projects the Society is supporting
            • news from the Society
            • sources of information about the line

Observation Carriage Appeal

GlaslynThe Society's current special appeal is for the Second Observation Carriage Fund. The Society has committed to funding the building of another observation carriage to improve the passenger experience on the WHR trains. The current observation carriage, Glaslyn (as seen here) has been a sensational success with seats in the carriage often highly sought after.

A second carriage based on this design would enable us to offer the same experience on both the main WHR carriage sets.  We need to raise 170,000 to pay for it. We are part way there but we want to reach the target very soon so that construction can commence. Any contribution will be gratefully received. Many thanks!

Volunteer accommodation at Dinas.

Station View Dinas (Pic: Laurence Armstrong)The Society’s board has today moved a step closer to providing volunteer accommodation at Dinas as we (the Society) have become as from today the owners of Station View, Dinas. This property is the bungalow at the entrance to Dinas station, formerly the home of the late Mrs Peggy McGinn.

Our intention is to initially let the property so that we can have time to get all the arrangements in place to allow volunteers to use the property when volunteering on the railway as well as earning some income whilst we do this.  The plan is to have it available as volunteer accommodation sometime next year.

The purchase of property has enabled us to achieve one of the prime objectives in our business plan.

Hopefully we can provide more information in the next issue of The Snowdon Ranger magazine.

About the Society

The Society is the official supporters' body for the project to rebuild, maintain and operate the Welsh Highland Railway, a narrow gauge line across the mountains of North Wales that closed in the 1930s. The project is led by the Ffestiniog Railway. WHRS members are playing a leading part in  the rebuilding and operation of the Railway.

Membership

New members are always welcome, whether they wish to play an active part in the Society's activities or just support the Railway  from a distance. In return for your support there are a number of benefits:

  • "The Snowdon Ranger", a quarterly magazine about the Railway
  • Free travel on the WHR and privilege travel on the Ffestiniog Railway
  • A link to a nationwide community of fellow supporters

We need the help and support of as many people as possible to realise this dream. If you are interested in joining, please see our membership page
